Prj31 Baseball hit over fence

A baseball is hit at a height of 3.0 ft above the ground with a velocity of 92 ft/s and at 45° to the horizontal.

Will the ball clear an 8.0 ft tall fence at 260 ft?

Diagram the situation. Take account of the 3.0 ft height, making the fence 5 ft above the plane where the ball is hit, and note that g in the British System is 32 ft/s2.

Write the six equations.

The way to answer the problem question is to know the height (y) at the 260 ft range.

Put the 260 ft into the equation for x and find the time for the ball to travel 260 ft in the x-direction.

Now find the height at this time.

The ball does not clear the fence. It hits 1.0 ft down from the top.
