In an automobile accident the headlamp
cover is broken and a piece travels 4.6 m ( in the original direction of the automobile)
before landing on the ground. The piece was initially 0.60 m above the road traveling at v0,
the speed of the automobile. What was the speed of the automobile when the cover was
broken?
This is a projectile problem and just to
show that the origin of the coordinate system does not have to be (0,0) where the
projectile starts, put the origin on the roadway 0.60 m under the piece.
The equations are
When y is zero, the x is
4.6m, and this coincides with t = 0.35 s so
