Oicture this gently rising exponential curve with the individual monthly bars representing the return for that month. The sum of those bars or the area under the curve is the total return.

The 0.1 in the exponent has to be taken care of with a change of variable. Doing this and performing the evaluation of the integral produces the return over the four years.
